This book has a deceptive and ambiguous title. Deliberately. It is an untimely book. Yet it offers a clear, unequivocal path, a way out of some of the problems and inadequacies of the present. In that sense it is timely.

In this book we present current issues in the philosophy and methodology of the Eastern martial arts, especially as they have come to develop in the West. Thus we do not offer here much practical advice on technique or physical exercise. Rather our concern lies with practical and moral issues of contemporary martial arts practice.
