Weber's essays examine a wide range of themes on a landscape once contested by native Americans, Spaniards, Mexicans, and Anglo Americans. Going back to the earliest explorers, he looks at some of the myths that informed Coronado and Fray Marcos de Niza, as well as some of the myths that their expeditions engendered. Several of his essays, including those on the Alamo and on the stereotyping of Mexican Americans, reveal the ethnocentrism of Western history and suggest that some myths have provided a rationale for prejudice and discrimination.
